I Am London
October 7th, 2011 § Leave a Comment
Current exhibit and project facilitated by myself and Araceli at THECUBE London, where 5 young artists, some just starting their creative journey, use their work to challenge socio-economic disparity and ask the question: How does design reflect social unrest?
See our Article below….
I am London is a collective of five young artists whose art responds to their own experiences of multifaceted London. This exhibit, comprising almost all new work commissioned byTHECUBE to coincide with London Design Week, flows from a series of discussions about the recent social unrest in London and the lives these young people lead on a daily basis, the basis for their very unique perspective on London.
The collective’s members – aged 17-26 and spanning five London boroughs – have varying levels of formal art training and include a mix of recent arrivals and Londoners born and bred. Curated and convened by Gabrielle Cooper, this is the first time they are sharing their work with an audience. The exhibit’s photographs and illustrations explore the influence London’s economy has on their daily lives and creative output. The coming together of this collective for this exhibit builds a creative soapbox to broadcast little-heard stories. The recent riots not only shook the economy and Britain’s perception of its inner cities, but tarnished the reputation of a generation. In light of this negative impression, magnifying the voices of young Londoners becomes only more relevant and necessary…..READ MORE

THECUBE London,

THECUBE presents new artist Bex Singleton. Her body of work Right There, Right Then, is an extension of her exploration of interaction with people through photography and fine art. The work involves a high level of physical interaction: between herself and the subject; between the subject and the photographic paper; between herself, the photographic paper and the application of chemicals; and between subjects in duos and multiples. At a time when human interaction is becoming increasingly mediated by technology, and we experience less physically real encounters, this return to the physical process of the photogram represents a desire to reconnect mind and body in the creation of an image.

Cape Verde
January 26th, 2011 § 1 Comment
My Parents spent the week on the island Cape Verde, only to arrive home again this morning. The photographs and videos they brought back showed the beautiful colours of the island, the rich blue sea and the masses of sand and sun.
This photograph was taken by my father, though it isn’t much of a representative of the sea and sand I claim I saw in the photographs, I really love the composition so I felt the urge to share.
Innovation and Art
December 21st, 2010 § Leave a Comment
“Being creative is using imagination. Being creative is about trial and error. Being creative is noticing an issue and taking the initiative and courage to address it, voice it, change it or fight against it. Innovation is the carrying out of combined ideas. It is the process and the result, the production line that assembles ideas and ensures they are successfully intertwined to make something new, relevant and working. The results of innovation are not final nor is it the end. The result remains open for innovation to happen again….”

What Should Art Do?
November 2nd, 2010 § Leave a Comment
“Art is the visual representation of our thoughts, opinions and emotive responses to our surroundings. It is a container for psychological processes and skills. Art has power. It heals, comforts, amuses and enrages us. It encourages debates, discussion, thoughts and the desire to express opinion. We fall in love with art for many reasons, some because we can relate to them emotively or visually, some because we admire the technical skill or the bravery in the artists exploiting themselves, and in others we respond to the art that takes us out of our comfort zones….”

THECUBE presents BENJAMIN BUCKLEY

BENJAMIN BUCKLEY
Projective Drawings
Exhibiting at THECUBE,
October 14, 2010
18.30-21.30
Entry: FREE
Benjamin Buckley, a London based Artist and a recent graduate from Camberwell College of Art will be flaunting his bold, vibrant and intricate canvas based images at THECUBE London in his first solo show.
The subject matter within Benjamin’s images are those that have evolved from his imagination, his “embedded daydreams”. They are fantasy based scenes constructed for the reasons that they do not exist in reality but appears real through his artistic process. The buildings and scenes are not designed for the purpose of creating a utopia but done almost as if they are designed to fit in with the real world, with signs, shapes, symbols that the viewer can recognise and identify with. However with the knowledge that his buildings will never be real allows them to hang in limbo, a kind of homelessness as his buildings belongs neither in a fantasy utopia nor the real world. The images stand as a symbol of Benjamin’s imagination and ability to compare it to his reality, and is expressed in ways viewers can read into similarly, these are his Projective Drawings.
THECUBE has chosen to sponsor Benjamin as he embodies the combination of artistic integrity and commercial intelligence. He uses innovative digital technology to make his work unique, interesting and visually stimulating. He understands and articulates a visual aesthetic that is unlike many of his contemporaries.

THECUBE

I’ve been working at THECUBE in London, Shoreditch, for almost 5 months now. It is a fantastic incubator of new creative businesses/enterprise and creative networking.
THECUBE was created and launched in September 2009 by founder Araceli Camargo-Kilpatrick, and aims to inspire ideas and enterprise throughout. It offers affordable workspaces to encourage and inspire co-working and co-learning as well as hosting many of its own creative workshops to stimulate creative drive and generate excitement about creative thought processes. THECUBE realise the importance in allowing people to discover their own methodology and aim to provide support alongside them. The space is also one where networking amongst other “Cubers” could inspire, encourage and offer guidance whilst preventing the journey of new ideas and businesses from being a lonely one.
THECUBE also specialises in helping graduates as it is often difficult to know how and where to pursue your interests after finishing University/Course. They have a large creative network and openly help the “Cubers” by introducing them to the right people.
I’ve really enjoyed being a part such a creative team, and admire how they’ve come together and strived constantly to improve, help others and hold on to their values of a supportive and creative community.
For many of you considering starting your own business, or are freelancing and need somewhere to call your base, THECUBE is definitely the place to go.

RewireLondon was the first unconference I’d ever attended so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I went with my friend, poet, artist and blogger Yemisi Blake. We took photos, participated in workshops and blogged for Rewire. I had a fantastic time and am very proud to have been a part of it.
